North West Matric Results 2016 – 2020

The North West has not had a consistent rise in its matric results between 2016 and 2019. Instead, they have experienced an up and down trend in their matric pass rates.

2019 was finally the year to break their pass rate, proving to be the highest results in 6 years.

Year by Year

Over the 4 years, the province ended on an overall high note. Here are the North West matric pass rates from 2016 to 2019, plus an educated 2020 prediction.

With the fourth rank provincially out of all nine provinces, the North West saw a matric pass rate of 82.5%. This was close to a 10% increase from the year before. This kept North West well above the national average.

This was the year that the highest number of matrics wrote their final exams, until the historically high number in 2020.

This was the year that the matric pass rates took a bit of a tumble, decreasing by over 3% to a matric pass rate of 75.1%.

Despite the fall in their matric pass rate, they were able to stay well about the national average.

This year the North West saw an increase from their 2017 results. Their matric pass rate increased to 81.1%, finally pushing them back into the 80 percentile range.

Yet again, the province was able to remain about the national average with their high matric pass rate.

This was the year that the North West experienced their highest matric pass rate in 6 years. The matric pass rate showed great improvement at 86.8%.

This pushed the province to rank third place provincially.

The CEO of Skills Academy, Jan Badenhorst made the following prediction about the 2020 pass rate for North West:

“I think that we will see covid have an impact on these results. But there will be a lot of pressure on Umalusi to adjust marks so as to not disadvantage matrics who have had a horrific year. My prediction is that the pass rate will not drop below 80%.”
