Students who did not have the opportunity to finish their matric year can get their matric certificate by completing an Adult Matric course. You can apply for an Amended Senior Certificate regardless of how long you have been out of school.
Amended Senior Certificate: Adult Matric
- SAQA ID number: 49647
- Programme type: National Qualification
- Award type: Senior Certificate
What Are The Entry Requirements For Adult Matric?
You will need to meet the following criteria to qualify for an Adult Matric course:
- Have an incomplete matric result
- You need to have a grade 9 or equivalent certificate
- You must be at least 21 years old to write your final examinations
You can start the Adult Matric course when you are 19 years old if you plan to complete it within three years. As long as you are 21 years old by the time of your examinations, it does not matter if you start your course a little early.
Traditional Matric vs Adult Matric
When comparing the Traditional Matric certificate to the Adult Matric certificate, they are identical. Both certificates are on an NQF level 4 and both are awarded by Umalusi.
Whilst Traditional Matric (school matric) must be completed during High School with examinations written within the institution itself, Adult Matric can be completed via Distance Learning. This means that you can complete these studies from home and only write your exams at a DHET exam venue.
Traditional Matric must also be completed in one year after finishing grade 10 and grade 11. With Adult Matric, you can choose to complete the contents of grade 10 to matric within 12, 24, or 36 months, whichever works best for you.
You will also have no physical classes and can complete your studies whenever you have the time.
The Adult Matric Course Contents
During an Adult Matric course, the content consists of work from grade 10 to grade 12, also known as the Further Education and Training phase of high school.
This means that the Matric Course consists of three years’ worth of studies. The course can thus be completed within 36 months, but 12 to 24 months is the recommended amount of time to set out for these studies.

Bellview Institute of Distance Learning: Accreditation Details
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) offers the Adult Matric (Amended Senior) Certificate. For Adult Matric, there is no accreditation process.
After writing your matric exam, your paper will be sent to the DBE where it will be marked. Your certificate will then be made and accredited by Umalusi.
It has been a requirement for the accreditation of TVET and FET Private Colleges to register with the Department of Higher Education from August 2016 to February 2020. The Joint Communique 1 of 2016 communicated this requirement which was a reversal of the 2012 opposite position.
The Director-General of Higher Education, Mr. GF Qonde, published that the requirement from the Joint Communique 1 of 2016 was revoked in Communique 01 of 2020. This was published in the Government Gazette on 7 February 2020.
Point 4.1 as stated in the Government Gazette on 7 February 2020, explains that Private Colleges “are no longer required to lodge applications for registration with (the) Department (of Higher Education) as private colleges or private higher education institutions as contemplated in the Joint Comuniqué 1 of 2016.”
Since the accreditation process does not exist anymore, Private colleges can no longer apply to register with the DHET.
The colleges that have been accredited by the DHET while the process was still valid, now retain this accreditation until it reaches its normal expiry date (typically for three to five years after the issued accreditation). The accreditation will then expire and be unable to be renewed.
The Government Gazette of 7 February 2020 now states that the correct accreditation process is for private colleges to obtain QCTO accreditation. They will then be able to apply to receive a DHET Exam Number from their Exams Division.
To get this exam number, the college must pass the DHET Exams Division Registration requirements and receive a site visit from the DHET Exams Division. Once the college passes and meets the requirements, it will be issued with a confirmation letter for its exam number and official accreditation.
Following the latest accreditation requirements, Bellview Institute of Distance Learning is:
- Accredited by the QCTO
- Accredited by the DHET with an exam number (019992110 / 1199995016) to offer the following NATED programmes:
